Does My Caravan Need Insurance?

If you own a trailer caravan that is towed behind your car, it may not need its own insurance cover. You will likely be able to cover your trailer on the car you use to tow it, as long as you are insured on that vehicle. Since trailers add value to the initial vehicle, you will need to get a combined insurance policy which can financially cover both your car and your trailer, or alternatively, you could get separate insurance for your trailer and its contents. It is a good idea to make sure that your cover includes public liability cover in case of any incident of your trailer causing any incidents on or off the road to a member of the public or property.

If you own a caravan that is not driven (a static caravan), you will not need motor insurance on it. Rather, you may look to get out contents insurance on your static caravan to protect your belongings within it.

How Much Does Caravan Insurance Cost?

The cost of caravan insurance will vary depending on the model of your vehicle, the condition it is in, how much mileage it does and how many drivers you wish to be insured on it. Further, your driving history will play a part in the cost of your caravan insurance, although at Proper Finance we do provide insurance products tailored to convicted drivers.

Criteria for Applying

In order to get vehicle insurance with one of Proper Finance’s trusted insurers, you must:

  • Be at least 17 years of age.
  • Hold a valid EU driving licence.
  • Be a permanent resident of the UK.
  • Have a vehicle that is owned and registered by you, your spouse, partner or civil partner at your address.
  • Have the relevant documents to prove that you, your spouse, partner or civil partner are the legal owner and primary driver of your vehicle.

You will also have to hold a valid licence for the type of caravan you are wanting to insure. For example, for those with trailers, will have to hold a valid ‘B+E’ licence, and motorhome drivers will have to hold either a category C1 licence (for MAMs of 3.5 -7.5 tonnes) or a category C licence (for MAMs over 7.5 tonnes).

What Level of Cover Can I Get?

The following cover is available for caravans or motorhomes:

Storm or flood damage cover: If the event of a storm or flood damage, your vehicle can be repaired or replaced by your insurer.

Public liability cover: This provides compensation to the member of the public if your caravan accidentally causes damage to either their person or their property. If you get involved in an incident involving a member of the public, provided it was accidental, your public liability cover will pay for the subsequent costs.

Accidental damage cover: If your caravan is accidentally damaged, either by yourself, someone else or through some other means such as bad weather, it can be repaired or replaced by your insurer.

Theft or vandalism cover: Should your trailer caravan be stolen or vandalized, your cover will provide replacement or compensation for the damage done.

Family and friend cover: You have the opportunity to add friends and family to your insurance policy so that they can assist in the driving responsibility on trips, weekends away or for general use.

Motorhome Insurance

If you live in and drive a motorhome, motor insurance will not be sufficient on its own to protect your assets. Because you live in your motorhome, you will also require buildings and contents insurance to cover any damage to the exterior of your motorhome and all of your valuables inside the vehicle. Just as you would get insurance on a house and the items within it, it is important to treat your motorhome the same way. The difference is that additional motor insurance is needed to cover you when you are driving your motorhome.
