What Is a 0% Purchase Credit Card?

A purchase credit card enables you to purchase high-cost items upfront and then pay off the balance over a period of time agreed with the lender, often with 0% interest. Providing that you pay the balance in full by the end of this 0% period, the credit card will not cost you any additional fees. However, if you do not make payments on time, you will usually be charged just £12 and your 0% interest rate will be withdrawn and put onto a standard rate.

What Can I Buy With a Purchase Credit Card?

Any items that run in the few hundreds or thousands of pounds can be put on a purchase credit card, giving you a bit longer to pay them off. Some providers include credit cards with air miles such as American Express, helping your spend go towards future flights or other travel benefits.

Common large purchases include:

  • Furniture e.g sofas, chairs, tables.
  • Electronics e.g TVs, speakers, computers.
  • Baby items e.g cots, prams, chairs.
  • Clothes e.g fashion, suits, shoes.
  • Home items e.g white goods, lamps, beds.
  • Gifts e.g jewellery, engagement rings, anniversary gifts.

Why Is the Interest Rate on a Purchase Card Important?

Most purchase credit cards are 0% interest during the introductory period, meaning that you pay absolutely nothing for using the card, providing that you make the full repayment on time. However, once the introductory offer ends, you will be placed on the standard rate which can be higher – so keeping an eye on the interest rate is key.

Once the introductory offer ends, you can look at moving the debt onto a balance transfer credit card, which can also be 0% for a certain period.
